Artists-at-Large is participating in Jazz Week with two events that will take place at the Hyde Park Library:

April 30 @ 6pm: Forbes Graham + Kevin Frenette duo
May 2 @ 2pm: Jazz on the (not so) big screen: Films from Artists-at-Large concert footage

Both events will take place in Menino Hall at the Hyde Park Branch Library, 35 Harvard St, Hyde Park. The library is not far from the Eagles hall, and both events are free. We hope to see you there! And we hope to put on more events as soon as it is possible.

Qfwfq Duo
Composer and sound artist Andrea Pensado teamed up with digital artist Greg Kowalski in Krakow, Poland, in 1997 to form Qfwfq duo. The duo's main concern has been live sound-image interaction and the use of movement to articulate complex sounds and digital visual material. Their work is highly performatic and often involves the use of sensors and/or motion tracking devices. They moved to the US after having lived 5 years in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

WE trace the pow'r of Death from tomb to tomb,
And his are all the ages yet to come.
'Tis his to call the planets from on high,
To blacken Phoebus, and dissolve the sky;
His too, when all in his dark realms are hurl'd,
From its firm base to shake the solid world;
His fatal sceptre rules the spacious whole,
And trembling nature rocks from pole to pole.
Awful he moves, and wide his wings are spread:
Behold thy brother number'd with the dead!
From bondage freed, the exulting spirit flies

Hey everybody-
Next Monday's duo between Luther Gray and Forbes Graham will be the last concert or event held on Monday. Starting in August we are moving to Thursdays. Hope to see you then! We are also starting a new event called Musicians-at-Large, a sort of open rehearsal. If you are a band needing a cheap rehearsal space and don't mind a couple random strangers peeping in on the creative process, this is for you! Rehearsal space is certainly expensive so this might be a low cost alternative that works for you.

To celebrate it's 7th anniversary, Artists-at-Large presents a screening of "Immersions" by Dr. Emil Tobenfield.

"Immersions" is a genre-crossing intermedia improvisation
series built around the core of Doctor T (Video), Dean Stiglitz
(ElectroFlute and Electronics) and Ramona Herboldsheimer (Hammered
Dulcimer and Other Things) with guest musicians and sometimes dancers
or other visual artists. The performance is a dialog between music
and imagery, with the performers in each medium reacting to the other.

These musicians are some of the first that I (Forbes) had the pleasure of playing with when I moved to the Boston area and they are also some of the finest that you'll find here. They've been working together for decades and it shows in their sound. Syd, Glynis, and Eric have a wonderful musical lineage going back to the Black Music program of Bennington College run by Bill Dixon. Syd was one of the founders of the Friends of Great Black Music loft in Chinatown. They've worked with a lot of great musicians over the years. This is a must see event. I will be joining them on the second set as well.

Cold Reading Trio is an electro-acoustic group based out of New York City who explore the territory between original sound and imitation in a constantly evolving musical dialog. They construct electro-acoustic environments featuring two-way interactions between live instruments and processed samples of these instruments created in real-time. The result is a texture encompassing the complete spectral range between the extremes of acoustic and electric sound.

Artists-at-Large presents:

Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) is originally from Osaka, Japan. He has performed in over 80 cities in 7 countries and collaborated with over 163 artists worldwide. In the past 10 years he has released nearly 50 recordings on CD. He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense, organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/ experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. In addition to live solo and ensemble performances he works as a sound designer for film and television. He also teaches Masterclasses and Workshops at the University level, appearing at Wesleyan University, The University of Denver, and Jaotong University in Shanghai amongst others. He also heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was selected as a performing artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster as well as a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant. He has also appeared at the Smithsonian Institution, The Institute for Contemporary Art, The Stone, and The Musee d'art moderne et contemporaine. Most recently, Nakatani has created a 9-piece Bowed-Gong performance, which includes 40" and 35" gongs.

The improvised music trio Dilettante, who are from Boston, will be opening the show. The trio consists of Andrew Eisenberg, percussion, Josh Jefferson, reeds, and Ryan McGuire, bass.

Keefe Jackson’s Fast Citizens is a Chicago group which is exploring the boundaries between composition and improvisation. Jackson, saxophonist and principal composer, formed the group in 2003. "...Jackson's marbled tone expresses a lovely lyricism no matter how brusque or serrated his lines get." -Chicago Reader.

In 2004 they held a residency at Chicago’s famous club the Hideout, during which time the group developed a formidable cohesiveness. Their music has broadened, even redefined the idea of a “cooperative” band.

The group includes saxophonist Aram Shelton and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, who also compose for the group, and cornettist Josh Berman, drummer Frank Rosaly, and bassist Anton Hatwich.

“Ready Everyday” is the first recording from the Fast Citizens, it came out in October 2006 on Delmark Records. Berman, Jackson, and Rosaly, along with Marc Unternährer, are members of the Chicago Luzern Exchange, whose 2005 debut “Several Lights” (Delmark Records) received great critical and audience acclaim.

[The Fast Citizens] synthesizes a wide range of influences – Mingus and Sun Ra foremost among them – characterized by a spiritual quest that is often ecstatic, and a structural coherence that is all the more impressive for seeming to result from a quasi-telepathic interaction. —Dominique Denis, L’Express, Toronto

BIOGRAPHIES

Jeff Kimmel:
Composer and bass clarinetist Jeff Kimmel has performed with Joe Morris, Allan Chase, Daniel Levin, the Callithumpian Consort and others in many venues in New York, Boston, and Chicago, such as: CAMI Hall, the Stone, the Issue Project Room, Jordan Hall, the Zeitgeist Gallery, and the Artists-at-Large Gallery. He has appeared in concerts produced by the Bowerbird Series in Philadelphia and the MIM Series in Boston. Kimmel holds a B.M. from the New England Conservatory, where he studied composition and improvisation. He currently coordinates the Music Workshop series in Hyde Park, MA.

Kim Cass:
Bassist Kim Cass hails from Maine. He attended New England Conservatory, where he had the opportunity to work with Ran Blake, Joe Maneri, Allan Chase, Ruth Lepson, and George Garzone. While there, he performed with and contributed compositions to Miwokido Kid, which was selected as the 2004-2005 Honors Jazz Quartet, and presented concerts at numerous community organizations. Kim recently performed at the Panama Jazz Festival. He likes flying through the air, cats, sneakers, illustration, and hopes to involve these things in his life and music.

Luther Gray:
Drummer Luther Gray was born March 10, 1972 in New Orleans, LA. His family moved to Washington, D.C. where, as a teenager, he started playing drums in punk rock bands. Though largely self-taught, his musical training involved drum lessons from Kim Martin, Larry Bright, Steve Bagby, and Mickey Newman. In 1995 he graduated the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Music, after which he taught privately and performed in the Washington , D.C. area with, among others, Butch Warren, Cecil Payne, Webster Young, Tsunami, Liquorice, Peter Edelman, Jenny Toomey, Bob Butta, and Buck Hill. Since moving to Boston he has resumed teaching private drum lessons and has played with Joe Morris, Jay Hoggard, Joe McPhee, Timo Shanko, Cameron Brown, Allan Chase, Joseph Daley, Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell, Ida, Geoff Farina, Andrew White, Rob Brown, Bill Lowe, Greg Abate, Raqib Hassan, Bill Pierce, Mitch Seidman, Steve Swell, Joe Beck, Fred Anderson, Ken Vandermark and many others. In addition to his performing schedule Luther teaches art and music at an after-school program for elementary school children.

Biographies:

Eric Zinman

At the forefront of creative music for more than 20 years, Eric Zinman's piano playing has been described by Bob Rusch as a "fleet and appealing touch," rooted in the language of his teachers Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Lowell Davidson and many others. His style is marked by his relation to the trap set drums, varying densities of sound masses and melodies spanning the whole keyboard with a surprising variety of touches, dynamics, phrasing, silence and an arresting balance between the pedaled and unpedaled sounds.

Eric Zinman has played with Craig Schildhauer, Raqib Hassan, Toshi Makihara, Sabir Mateen, Marco Eneidi, Lisle Ellis, Peter Valsamis, Tatsuya Nakatani, Glynis Lomon and Blaise Siwula, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Jan Roder, Thomas Rehnert, Mario Rechtern, Benjamin Duboc, Didier Lasserre, John Voigt and Laurence Cook. Mr Zinman has also composed music for dance and theatre using verbal directives as well as graphic scores.

Richard Poole

After four decades in the music business, Richard has played in every type of ensemble, in all environments, offering all styles of music in the U.S., Canada and abroad. Currently, Richard is performing in the U.S. and France, where he teaches and plays at the Chateau D’Ancy-le-Franc in August every year.

Originally from Cape Cod, McGuire studied composition and performance at UMass-Lowell and Berklee, and has recordings on Tzadik, Hydrahead, Robotic Empire, and Holy Roar Records. BIOGRAPHIES

Guitarist Kevin Frenette began playing music at the age of eleven and began working professionally in the 1990s. He studied guitar, composition, and music theory at UMASS-Dartmouth where he received a BA in Theory/Composition and has performed throughout the Northeast USA making music that is inspired by both contemporary improvisation and avant-garde jazz. He has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Tatsuya Nakatani, Andy McWain, Jonathan LaMaster, Andrew Hickman, Eric Platz, Todd Keating, Erik VanDam and Gabe Cabral. In 2007, Fuller Street Music released Kevin’s first date as a leader: Connections (featuring Tatsuya Nakatani on percussion). Forbes Graham has appeared on over 30 recordings, ranging in style from contemporary classical, metal, and jazz. His compositions are extremely mathematical, highly contrapuntal, vivacious, and invigorating, drawing from the cross-cultural experiences he has lived. His solo trumpet performances explore micro-climates created from deconstructing the trumpet and the utilization of extended techniques. He has performed or recorded with a diverse group of musicians, including Roger Turner, Kayo Dot, The Flying Luttenbachers, Rakalam Moses, Daughters, Jim Hobbs, Erase Errata, Thoughtstreams, and Raqib Hassan. Boston-born improvising pianist/composer Andy McWain has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Karl Berger, Assif Tsahar, Tiger Okoshi, Santi Debriano, Brian Melvin, Daniel Levin, Tatsuya Nakatani, Joe Giardullo, John Dirac, Jorrit Dijkstra, Hafez Modirzadeh, Reuben Radding, Albey Balgochian, Laurence Cook, Dino Govoni, Luther Gray, Jim Robitaille, Brooke Sofferman, Bruno Raberg, Dennis Warren's Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble, and the Zen Bastards, among others. He studied at UMass-Dartmouth, the Aspen Music School, and the New England Conservatory of Music (M.M., composition), and participated in artist residencies at Yaddo (NY), the Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL) with Butch Morris, and the Akiyoshidai International Art Village (JPN). McWain also founded and produces the Audible Think Improvised Music Series in Massachusetts. Recent gigs include three months in early 2006 in a jazz quintet house band at the club _Number Five_ in Shanghai, China. McWain's recordings include his quartet debut STARFISH with saxophonist Assif Tsahar, bassist Noah Jarrett, and drummer Chris Poudrer. In December, the trio recording McWain-Balgochian-Cook: VIGIL was released and features McWain with Albey Balgochian (Cecil Taylor's current bassist), and veteran drummer Laurence Cook (Bill Dixon, Sabir Mateen, Paul Bley). The recording Andy McWain Ensemble: RESEMBLANCE will be released this spring. Adam Dotson is a improvising euphoniumist in the Boston area. He has performed with Joe Morris, Dave Douglas, Gerald Cleaver, Allan Chase, Bob Nieske, Luther Gray, and Steve Lantner. He can be seen playing in the Boston area with the Greek brass band Poladactolos Orchestra as well as the Haitian band Nakawoot. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Interlochen Arts Academy.

The Sven Trio was formed at the meeting of three people from three different countries in a classroom at New England Conservatory in Boston. Jameson Swanagon studies free improvisation with Joe Morris and composition with Anthony Coleman at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he is pursuing a Master's degree in Contemporary Improvisation. He has also worked with Ran Blake, Brad Shepik and Dominique Eade. In the San Luis Obispo New Times it was observed that Mr. Swanagon's playing "can be messy and erratic but mesmerizing in their frenetic qualities."

Jameson has been a member of a number of big bands and small ensembles including the California State College All-State Jazz Ensemble in 2005. Contrastingly, he co-leads the alternative rock outfit Bloody Heads in his home state of California. The group has self-released two albums and has played at such established Los Angeles venues as The Knitting Factory, Tangiers, and Spaceland.

Since 2006, Mr. Swanagon has been performing with ensembles in the Boston area that allow him to combine the distortions and imperfections of the guitar with his jazz experience, and with his studies in free improvisation and composition. The chamber rock quartet Everything is a Little Glorious and the free improvising group Sven Trio are two such ensembles. Italian bass player, composer and arranger Giacomo Merega has been living in Boston for the past five years. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2004 and is currently attending New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation Graduate program. Tupac Mantilla was born in Colombia in 1978. He began taking piano lessons at the age of four at the National Conservatory of Colombia. He started studying drum-set and percussion in 1994 at Javeriana University and and graduated with honors as a Classical Percussion Major in 2003. In 2000, he produced, composed and arranged the album “Sueños” (Dreams), a project dedicated to his work with orphaned children.Tupac won the “LOUIS ARMSTRONG” Jazz Award in 1997 (SWHS) and Bogota’s 2002 Philharmonic Orchestra Young Classical soloist Contest. He was selected to represent his country as a percussionist and as a soloist two consecutive years at the “Pergine Spetacolo Aperto” in Trento, Italy (2002 – 2003), and also performed in Italy with Argentinean Acapella Quartet OPUS 4. From 2003-2005, he was on the faculty at JAVERIANA UNIVERSITY Music Department and also at EL BOSQUE UNIVERSITY Music Program.He is the founder, composer and director of TEKEYE, the main experimental percussion group in Colombia, and has been an active jazz, rock and avant-garde performer and arranger in the international scene, including TV appearances and festivals.Tupac has studied and taken workshops with Ernesto Simpson, Julio Barreto, Alex Acuna, Ignacio Berroa, Memo Acevedo, Danilo Perez, Antonio Arnedo, Ney Rosauro, Ermeto Pascoal, among others. He is currently attending NEC’s Contemporary Improvistation Graduate Program.

Was in the middle of making dinner last night when I got called to do an emergency substitution in Coleman's student ensemble down in Hyde Park. The last time something like this happened, I was making a mango salsa or something and the phone rang with Steven Bernstein looking for a sub for his banjo player. Right there I should have known I was in trouble. An hour or two later, I ended up onstage at tonic with Bernstein telling the audience he had pulled me out of a threesome with Winona Ryder and Arnold Schwarzenegger or some such BS. Julie was not amused, and I swore I was not making that mistake again.
But in the end, I could not say no to Coleman, and there I was, back at the Eagles hall, sight reading his new piece "I Diet on Cod" with his hopped-up students. More fun than the MTO.

Bio:
Forbes Graham has appeared on over 30 recordings, ranging in style from contemporary classical, metal, and jazz. His compositions are extremely mathematical, highly contrapuntal, vivacious, and invigorating, drawing from the cross-cultural experiences he has lived. His solo trumpet performances explore micro-climates created from deconstructing the trumpet and the utilization of extended techniques. He has performed or recorded with a diverse group of musicians, including Roger Turner, Kayo Dot, The Flying Luttenbachers, Rakalam Moses, Daughters, Jim Hobbs, Erase Errata, Thoughtstreams, and Raqib Hassan. He is currently a member of the Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra and the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble. He can also be found sitting in with the Fully Celebrated Orchestra from time to time. Last night's concert began with duo improvisations from Wes Matthews on piano and me. Alex Asher and Brian Landrus brought out a new quartet with Kai Ando on bass and Thor Thorvaldsson on drums, and premiered a full set of new compositions. Tommey performed a solo improvisation on piano and amplifiers. The evening concluded with a sublime Icelandic lullaby sung by Helgi Jonsson, a friend of Thor's visiting from Iceland.

Brass Extravaganza

This past Monday (2/19), Tommey began the proceedings with a piece on the Univox, played through the Workshop's new guitar amp.

Boxcars Boxcars Boxcars (Dan Blacksberg - trombone, Adam Dotson - euphonium, and Joe Moffett-trumpet) performed a few improvisations in preparation for their performance at the JP Library on Thursday. Hooper Piccalero, a chamber ensemble with Danilo Henriquez and Lauren Strobel, trumpets, Matt Plummer, trombone, and Derek Beckvold, bari sax, performed some study pieces by Christian Wolff, in preparation for concerts at NEC on Wednesday and Sunday.

The second half featured Adam on piano in a duo with Joe, and a finale with all of the brass players together, which was surprisingly quiet, given the potential of the forces involved.
